CONTEXT
Pittsburgh’s Hill District is one of the most underserved neighborhoods in the nation, but 60 years ago, it was a thriving Black cultural hub. What happened?
This book is a culmination of research, exploration, and primary document collection about how language, in and out of the Hill, shaped its historic outcome. We analyzed and visualized data in hopes of drawing attention to the perils of a single story.

REFLECTION
This is one of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever worked on. It was a tremendous effort to get this done in seven weeks, and I’m endlessly thankful to Maddie for the thoughtful discussions and late nights.
It was really cool to dive into research and data visualization, and questions kept emerging the deeper we went. My greatest takeaway from this is a personal one. I read somewhere that data visualization is more of a mindset than a job, and I gotta agree. I keep asking what information is lost when something gets translated into a visualization. There’s data all around us, and there’s a story to be found in what is missing from it.
